Austin Community College has developed and approved a new Study Abroad program which started in May 2003. It takes place at the University of San Martin, in Lima Peru. Lima, the capital of Peru, is located on the coastal plain of the Pacific Ocean. The city is noted for its cultural treasures including colonial architecture and Pre-Columbian artifacts. Studying abroad in Peru will offer students an enriched learning experience. Austin Community College will offer a course in Cultural Anthropology, taught by Carol Hayman, ACC Instructor in Anthropology for 15 years, and the University of San Marcos will offer students courses in Spanish, according to their ability. The total experience offers field trips and direct cross-cultural encounters. Lima is the ideal center for studying life in Peru. This beautiful capital city, founded by Pizarro in 1535, is steeped in history. The most prosperous era for Peru was in the 17th century and a substantial part of the colonial architecture built at the time is still preserved in the ornate churches and stately homes. Artifacts of the colonial past are preserved in some of the many museums around Lima, which will be visited on field trips. Other museums to be visited include artifacts from Peru's Pre-Colombian past and examples of contemporary indigenous life in Peru. These museums include the famous Gold Museum, the Archeological and Ethnographic Museum, and the National Museum of Peruvian Culture, as well as ruins within the modern suburb of Miraflores and the ruins of Pachacamac, 30 kilometers from Lima. This Anthropology course, and the Spanish language course, will fulfill requirements toward the Associate of Arts degree in Anthropology at Austin Community College. The cost for the Study Abroad Program includes airfare from Austin, Texas to Lima, Peru, housing, tuition, field trips to sites in Lima. It is recommended that students bring about $500 for meals, local transportation, phone calls, laundry, souvenirs, and personal items. A deposit of $100 will reserve a place. |
