April Minutes
Budget for Fall
The Task Force members were asked to make requests for additional monies in existing accounts or for capital outlay items. These would be integrated and submitted using the new on-line budget system. This is to be done by Kathy Nabona.
Lecture and Lab Limits
It was found in the final drafts of the Fall and Spring schedules for school year 1998 - 1999 that there were discrepancies with the limits in lecture and lab limits. This was brought to Dr. Rodi and Nancy Glass' attention but, still the problem existed even at this late date.
The Task Force agreed to be in compliance with current safety codes as set forth by OSHA and pursue a decrease in the limits on chemistry lab classes.
Discussion of Large Lecture Sections
The Task Force disapproved of the large lecture sections offered for the Fall 1998 semester especially after the resolution adopted at the March meeting. We continue to feel that these large sections jeopardize student learning outcomes and decrease the quality of instruction.
Biotechnology Program
Linnea Fletcher presented her ideas and goals of the Biotechnology Program as it relates to the Chemistry Department. The Task Force approved to allow courses necessary to allow instruction at the various high school locations provided students enroll in a lab component concurrently. The lecture and lab instructor are to be ACC faculty or meet the SACS requirement of a Chemistry faculty member. The labs are to be offered at an ACC campus and follow all normal expected safety procedures and precautions.
Election of Task Force Leader
No member of the Task Force was willing to run in the elections for the Task Force Chair. No person was elected as Task Force Leader. Because there is no leader, the Chemistry Task Force will not meet during the summer months.
