Minutes from the 7/2/99 Chemistry Task Force Meeting

1. For the fall, the following college-wide lab meeting times were agreed upon.

(a) Introduction and General Chemistry labs:

Lab will not meet Aug. 25-27 (W-F).

Lab will meet Aug. 30-Sept. 3 (M-F), safety talk will be given during this week.

Students will begin performing experiments the week of Sept. 6.

The week of Nov. 22, lab will meet on that Monday.

Students will perform the last experiment the week of Nov. 29.

(b) Organic Chemistry labs:

Meetings will occur the same as the labs above except the last experiments will be performed the week of
Dec. 6

2. It was agreed that distribution of lab grades to the lecture instructor would be the responsibility of the lab instructor. Grades could be sent by intercampus mail, email or phone. Grades will be due by Monday, Dec. 13 at noon. Task force chair will compile a phone/email list for the fall semester.

3. Task force-approved materials for CHM 1614 labs consist of the handouts from the CER series. Campus syllabi will not include material from the old ACC custom lab manual. Materials from the old lab manual are not to be passed out for lab use.

4. TFC announced that the CER handouts for CHM 1614 labs would be sold as a shrink-wrapped package. This is contrary to previous task force request. However, the bookstore says that they would buy back unused copies from the students, provided they are kept clean.

5. Approved material for General Chemistry I and II was discussed. In past task force meetings it was voted that no titrations from the Slowinski lab book were to be done in the first semester labs. Currently, some students are doing Exp. 6 (Analysis of an unknown chloride) in the first semester. This experiment needs to move out of first semester labs.

6. Michelle Faust, ACC Risk Manager, was introduced. Preliminary members of a committee were selected to look into standardizing lab safety presentations to the students, safety training of instructors, lab technicians, etc. Other ideas were discussed and put on the agenda for the safety committee.
