Minutes from the 11/19/99 Chemistry Task Force Meeting
In attendance: Debbie Sackett, John Young, Kathy Nabona, Al Dumbuya, Ya-Ping Huang, Anita Thurwachter, Linda Gregory. Proxy votes submitted by Bill Cheek, Art Meyer
1. The date for the next task force meeting was determined to be January 28th.
2. At the next task force meeting we will be selecting new lab books for Introduction to Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. The books we have to select from (for now) include:
for Intro. to Chem.
"Chemical Principles" by Weiner and Peters (Saunders College)
"---?---" by Corwin (Prentice Hall)
for organic chemistry
"Operational Organic Chemistry" by Lehman (Prentice Hall)
"Organic Laboratory Techniques" by Pavia et al. (Saunders College)
"Experimental Organic Chemistry" by Wilcox and Wilcox (Prentice Hall)
"Experimental Organic Chemistry" 2nd ed by Gilbert and Martin (Saunders College)
3. The task force voted unanimously in favor of the student insurance. The students will be charged $2.00 per lab and will receive $10,000 of insurance for accidents occurring in lab. Lab accidents should be reported to the Campus Police as soon as possible. More details on this will be forthcoming.
4. Lab meeting times for the spring. Labs will not meet the first week of classes, the week of January 17th. Labs will meet the week of January 24th, at which time the introduction and safety talk will be given. No experiments will be performed this week. Experiments begin the week of January 31st. Each campus will have 12 consecutive (excepting Spring Break) experiments in class. The last week of experiments will be April 24th. The week of May 1st can be used for additional experiments, lab practicals/quizzes or check out, at the discretion of the lab instructor. Organic labs are expected to meet this week. Lab grades are due to the appropriate instructor (with a complete set to the Assistant Dean, also) on Monday, May 8th by 5:00 p.m.
5. We generated a list of basic lab duties to be performed by the instructors. This list will be typed up and passed out the first week of the new semester. The items to be included in the list are:
(a) instructors must be sure students are wearing goggles
(b) instructors (or a lab tech, in special cases) must supervise students at all time
(c) a minimum of a 20 minute lab lecture is necessary before students begin performing experiments
(d) instructors should demonstrate or discuss use of new glassware/equipment
(e) instructors must give a thorough safety discussion at the beginning of each semester
(f) instructors should thoroughly discuss waste disposal methods
(g) instructors are responsible for reasonable clean up of the lab, including replacing lids on jars.
6. Art requested (by letter) we consider putting Experiment 6 back into General Chemistry I. Everyone voted unanimously in favor of this move.
7. Debbie passed out the latest draft version of the mentoring process. The fact that we are doing a poor job of mentoring was discussed. The need for doing a better job was also discussed since many new adjunct instructors have been added to the eligibility list.
8. The addition of a new full-time faculty member in the fall of 2000 was announced (95% probability).
9. The Pinnacle will be holding labs this coming spring semester (95% probability).
10. Just a brief mention was given to the fact that one way we could get our labs and lectures unlinked is to offer labs and lectures as separate grades. This will be discussed in the next task force meeting.
