Setting Up Your Browser

To use these web pages you will need to enhance your browser with Chemscape Chime. This plug-in can be downloaded for free. The Chemscape Chime Plug-in is supported by both Netscape (3.04, 4.05 and higher and Internet Explorer (4.01 and higher). The current version of Chime is 2.0.3 for Win 95 and 2.0 for Mac.

If your browser crashes, try (1) turning off other applications and (2) restarting the browser. The chime plug-in is memory intensive, and netscape has some memory leaks that are "plugged" when the program is restarted.

3D Geometries

Geometric shapes for molecules will be listed under generic formulas using the following symbols:

A = central atom

B = atoms attached to the central atom

U = unshared electron pairs

For example, AB4 stands for a central atom with four other atoms attached, e.g., CH4. AB3U stands for a central atom with 3 other atoms attached, and a lone pair of electrons on the central atom. An example of this would be NH3.

With the plug-in loaded, you will be able to move the molecules around using the mouse. Click here to see a list of available geometric shapes.
