Announcements, Updates, Reminders, etc.

Textbooks: We're working on getting desk copies of textbooks for the Fall semester. The new edition of Kraemer will not be out until mid-July, nor will the new edition of Patterson. If you want to get your own desk copy, you might try the online service available through ACC's bookstore. The URL is http://austincc.bkstore.com. Once there, click on "faculty services" and you can order the desk copy that you need. You can also check with Debra Sweeney (223-4770) to see what we have in the storage room at Northridge.

Professional Development: The deadline to complete your professional development hours (and to have them entered into the online database) is July 31. Please try to complete them before then so that they can be entered online in a timely fashion. For information about this requirement, go to the Faculty Development Web page at http://irt.austin.cc.tx.us/fd/ This page has a link to FAQs, faculty development guidelines, available workshops, etc. In addition, put this date on your calendar: Faculty development Day to kick off the Fall semester is scheduled for Friday, August 24 at the Hyatt Regency. More information about this will be provided by the Faculty Development Office later in the summer.

Fall planning, Fall staffing, etc.: The Task Force's committee chairs for next year are beginning to plan for the Fall semester. Marilyn Mote-Yale will chair the Assessment Committee, Judy Nwachie will chair the Adjunct Faculty Committee, Karry Evans will chair the Professional Development Committee, and Stefan Haag will chair the Faculty Evaluation Committee. Staffing for Fall was begun by Frank Garrahan and will be completed by Gaye Lynn Scott. Direct your questions about Fall classes to Gaye Lynn (223-4767) or Debra Sweeney (223-4770).

Organizational Changes: Richard Fonte announced some changes in ACC's administrative structure necessitated by the departures of Elva Allie and Cha Guzman. For the next year, Steve Kinslow will be the Executive Vice President of Academic, Student, and Campus Affairs. There will be a national search in Spring 2002 for a new Executive Vice President for Instructional Affairs. In addition, Dr. Mary Hensley has been hired as Associate Vice President of Instructional Support Services, and an Executive Team has been created to provide consultation and direction. The Executive Team will consist of Steve Kinslow, Gerry Tucker, Martha Oburn, and George De Tuccio.

Assessment of Student Learning

The Task Force continued developing a short essay assessment instrument for both GOVT 2305 and GOVT 2306 to be administered in the Fall in randomly selected sections (including Open Campus sections). At its April meeting, the Task Force worked on the short essay questions for GOVT 2305. At this meeting we worked on the questions for GOVT 2306. Copies of the "test bank" for each course are attached. If you want to submit comments or suggestions about these questions, send them to Marilyn Mote-Yale (mmyale@austin.cc.tx.us).

Two short answer questions will be administered by randomly selected faculty members during the Fall semester, with different faculty members receiving different questions. Faculty will be notified in August if their section has been chosen and will be provided with written guidelines for the assessment process.
