has conducted many successful interviews this year and will
continue to work through the summer as more applications are
received. Professional Development &endash; The Symposium on
the Presidency with Dr. Bruce Buchanan, Professor of
Government at the University of Texas at Austin and a
presidency scholar, is scheduled for Saturday, May 5, 10:00
to 2:30 in the Board Room at Highland Business Center.
Attendance will count for four hours of professional
development, and lunch will be provided. Everyone is
invited and encouraged to attend. Faculty Evaluation Committee &endash; The

adjunct and full-time portfolios. Full-time faculty should
be receiving their evaluations (sent from the Dean's office)
soon. Assessment of Student Learning Committee &endash; The Task Force continued developing a short answer assessment instrument to be administered next Fall in randomly selected sections (including Open Campus sections) for both courses. The questions for GOVT 2305 were finalized at this meeting. The questions for GOVT 2306 will be finalized at a summer meeting of the Task Force. Two short answer questions will be embedded in each
selected faculty member's unit exams throughout the Fall
semester, with different faculty members receiving different
questions. Faculty will be notified in August if their
section has been chosen and will be provided with written
guidelines for the assessment process. Travel Requests Travel requests were approved for Judy Nwachie to attend
a conference on U.S. Foreign Policy in Transition, and for
Hugh Moore to participate in a Project Vote Smart research
project this summer. Chair's Report Fall schedule/staffing - The Fall 2001 schedule is online, the full-time faculty have been staffed, and the Task Force Chair is beginning the process of staffing adjunct faculty using the new eStaffing System. All faculty staffing from now on will be the responsibility of the Task Force chair. If you're having trouble with the eStaffing System, it wouldn't hurt to send an e-mail to the Task Force Chair (frankjg@) with your Fall preferences (just in case). Reminders and Announcements &endash; Check your professional development hours online (a link is available from the Government Department web page). Under current rules, any faculty member who has not completed his/her required professional development hours (four hours for adjunct faculty, twelve hours for full-time faculty) will not receive a step raise next year. The Dean announced that Gaye Lynn Scott was selected to chair the Government Task Force next year. The hiring committee has completed its work and we are awaiting the final decision from higher up the chain of command concerning who our new colleagues will be.
