Roget's Thesaurus (Searchable). Although based on the edition of 1911, was supplemented in 1991. As a result, one will find words added to the language since the original date of publication.
Encyclopedia.com. Contains 17,000+ articles from the Columbia Concise Electronic Encyclopedia. Claims to be "the Internet's premiere free encyclopedia." Entries are brief. One can browse through the alphabet or use a search engine to find a particular entry. Many articles have links to other articles in the encyclopedia. Once your entry displays on the screen, you can also use the "Related Books" and "Related Internet Sites" buttons to find more information about your subject. These are excellent features that make this site especially useful.
Encarta Concise Encyclopedia. This site was developed by Microsoft. There are 16,000 articles and more than 2,200 photographs, illustrations, maps, charts, and tables. One finds articles by means of a search feature. You will find it on the left side of the screen. Its title is "Find in Concise." Articles vary in length, but most are considerably longer than articles on the same subject in Encyclopedia.com (see above). Many articles have links to other articles in the encyclopedia.
Biographical Dictionary. 25,000+ entries. Very brief. Not suitable for citation in scholarly works but still perhaps useful for preliminary research. The site can connect to a list of published biographies of a person that are available from Barnes and Noble.
Biography. Database has over 20,000 names. Some of the data are from the Cambridge Encyclopedia Database and the Cambridge Dictionary of American Biography.
Perseus Encyclopedia. Specialized encyclopedia about ancient Greece. Arranged alphabetically and topically. Is searchable. Some entries in the alphabetical listings are actually indexes to primary source materials. The true encyclopdia entries often have links to relevant primary source materials.
Historical Maps Collection of the Perry-Castañeda Library, The University of Texas at Austin. Nine collections, covering the entire world.
Perpetual Calendar. Especially helpful if you need to know the day of the week on which an event occurred.
