Schedule Notes for MATH 1342
DON'T SPEND more money than necessary for your required materials. Read this entire page carefully before you buy anything.
In many programs, MATH 1342 is a good alternative course to MATH 1314, College Algebra. Check the requirements of your program at ACC and at the school to which you wish to transfer. More information about MATH 1342 is available.
Important note about refunds (or lack of them!):
If you buy the StatsPortal software directly from the publisher online, they do have a refund policy for a short period of time. Read details on their website. (See the link at the bottom of the StatsPortal page.)
If you buy software from the bookstore, it is not possible to return it once it is opened. If you buy a new text from the bookstore, which is shrink-wrapped with the StatsPortal card inside, it is not possible to return it once it is opened.
Important note about re-using software for another semester:
It is possible to use the software yourself in a subsequent semester if you didn't finish the course the first semester. As I understand it, your access is good for a year. However, this is non-transferable - you may not change the email address on your software after you register. So you can't give or sell it to someone else to use. Please note that this means you must use a permanent email address when you register.
About textbooks:
| Required | Availability | Cost |
| Textbook: The Basic Practice of Statistics, 4th edition, by David Moore, WH Freeman, 2006 | paper copy or electronic version |
paper copy: $120 new. This includes the StatsPortal access with the e-book with complete answers to the odd-numbered problems and ALL electronic supplements. Once the shrink-wrapped package with the book and folder is opened, it can't be returned to the store for full credit. See "Important Note" above. paper copy: approximately $50 used (Does not include any electronic supplements) electronic version: Included in the StatsPortal access, which includes the e-book, with complete answers to all the odd-numbered problems, links to applets and datasets, and ALL electronic supplements. StatsPortal alone costs about $50, from the bookstore or direct from the publisher. If you buy it from the bookstore, once the shrink-wrapped package with the book and folder is opened, it can't be returned to the store for full credit. See "Important Note" above. There is a short refund period if you buy it from the publisher. electronic version alone: The publisher also sells the electronic version of the book alone, without StatsPortal and all the supplements. Please do not buy this. You need the supplements for this course. |
| Minitab Manual to accompany the textbook. By Betsy Greenberg. 4th edition. | electronic version or paper copy |
Printable files for the whole Manual are included in the either of the packages of electronic supplements. (StatsPortal, cost about $49, or BPS Premium site (also called the Online Study Center) , cost about $25) Paper version: The publisher lists this as available, but has not printed any yet because no one has ordered them. Would cost about $42 if it were available. |
There are two versions of these paid-access sites - one with more features than the other.
For each of these, the access you purchase is for one user for 180 days. If you don’t finish the course in one semester, you will be able to extend your subscription for that one user an additional 180 days without additional payment (or with a very small handling charge) if you follow their directions. Students who began their access to StatsPortal the previous semester and were not able to finish the course should follow these directions to re-enroll in StatsPortal in their new instructor's course.
· Access to the electronic technology manuals, including the MINITAB Manual. (There is no Crunch-It Manual.)
· Access to applets and simulations to explore some statistical ideas. (These applets are mentioned in the text.)
· Access to Crunch-It, web-based statistical software that is similar to MINITAB and can be used to work on problems when you don’t have MINITAB easily available.
· Access to the online tutorials.
· Access to the electronic version of the Student Study Guide.
· Access to self-quizzes.
StatsPortal has all the materials in the Online Study Center, with the following additional materials/features.
· Complete (electronic) text of the book (Not very suitable for printing. Can only be printed one page at a time.) Basically, if you use only the e-book, you'll need to be online at all times when you are studying for this course or working on homework.
· Links from problems to allow you to just click a link to open the datafile for that problem in a statistics software package.
· Links to more full answers to the odd-numbered problems than the back of the printed text.
· Links to the online tutoring and to the applets and simulations used to illustrate the materials.
Other information:
· Electronic versions of the datasets and various other things are available for free from the publisher’s website. http://bcs.whfreeman.com/bps4e/ However, those do not include the technology manuals and the Student Study Guide.
· Each textbook has an access number which can be used to get access to Crunch-It for a semester. That access number is beneath the CD in the envelope in the back of the text. To use it, go to http://bcs.whfreeman.com/bps4e/ and follow the link to Crunch-It. If you buy a used book, someone may have already used that code and so you will not able to use it. On the other hand, if the previous owner of the book had StatsPortal or the BPS Premium site (OnlineStudyCenter), they probably would not have used this code. You can buy access to Crunch-It for 6 months for $5 from http://www.statcrunch.com/
Software: You are expected to use MINITAB statistical software in the course for some problems. It is available on campus for you to use, and your teacher will provide details. If you want to buy it to use at home, first get used to it at school, and then follow the directions on your first-day handout about what website to go to for further information. This does not come with the textbook datasets. Follow the information on that website for making those textbook datasets available.
Software for Distance Learning students: You will be expected to use MINITAB at home. The required package for the Distance Learning students includes the actual MINITAB software. For more information, see the website for that class.
