LOCATION                                                                            Return to top
Buckholts is about 25 miles SE of Temple, TEXAS

The following map is for when you get close!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS FROM THE SOUTH (AUSTIN AREA)

(These instructions were corrected 12-22-03)
Take I-35 to Jarrell & take the Hwy 487 exit
Turn right onto 487
Continue on # 487 to the caution light in Bartlett . . . . about 10 miles
At the caution light, turn left on to Hwy 95
Continue about 5 miles and turn right on FM. 2268. There will be a large auto wrecking yard on your right just before you get to #2268. If you end up in Holland, you went too far.
You will be going East on #2268, for about 10 miles
At the "T" with # 437, turn Right and continue about 1/2 mile, to a bright yellow farm house on your right
Just past that yellow farmhouse, turn left onto County Road #406. The road is marked with the standard TxDot signs, just before you reach it.
Stay on # 406 (a gravel road), for about 4 miles, and cross the Little River on the NEW concrete bridge. (Any who desire, may want to take pictures of the old iron bridge, built on 1909, and now is designated as a "walking Bridge" only.)
After you cross the river, go about 300-400 yards to the large electric sub station on the right. Turn right, just past the substation and follow the gravel lane to the Chambers' house. You cannot see the house from the road, but you will be passing through several clumping bamboos on either side of the lane.

DIRECTIONS FROM THE NORTH:: DALLAS OR WACO, ETC.
Take I-35 to Temple, TX and turn left (east) onto Hwy #36 (the sign will show "To Cameron").
Stay on #36, THROUGH Rogers . . . . about 10 miles
About 3 miles past Rogers you will pass UNDER the RR underpass
Then pass a TxDot picnic area on the right, and IMMEDIATELY after that, you will turn RIGHT onto CR #104 (Up and over the RR track, onto the county gravel Road)
Continue (south) on #104 for about 4 to 4½ mi. to a "T" with CR 106. There may not be a sign here, but Kinder will try to have markers up CR 406 turnoff, it is easy to miss but is the only "T."
Turn Right onto # 106 and proceed about ½ mile to the Electric Substation on the east side of the Road.
Turn LEFT into the gravel lane, just at the north side of the electric substation
Follow the lane to the Chambers' House. You cannot see the house from the road, but you will be passing through several clumping bamboos on either side of the lane.

GROVE WORK                                                                    Return to top

Grove cleaning in the morning begins at 8:30 a.m.

We will be cleaning  groves of  Phyllostachys bambusoides, P. bambusoides 'Castillon', P. congesta (possibly)        P. decora, P. nigra 'Henon', P. rubromarginata, P. vivax, & P. 'unknown'

All poles will be divided up among the grove workers to be taken home for free.

Lunch plans                                                                                         Return to top

A LARGE pot of beans will be cooking in the house.
A couple of briskets will be ready, along with a 'tip' jar if you want to pitch in a buck or two for the meat.
Bring a dish and make it a pot luck lunch.
Bring your own drinks.

After lunch, we dig, in the same groves which were cleaned.                    Return to top

Readily available bamboo varieties are:
Phyllostachys bambusoides, P. decora, P. rubromarginata, & P. vivax

Very limited bamboo varieties are:
P. bambusoides 'Castillon', P. congesta (possibly),  P. nigra 'Henon',  & P. 'unknown'

Several Bambusa varieties are available if you want to chip away at large clumps of them, but this isn't a very good time of year to 'dig' those.

There may be a few shoots to dig in an area where P. bambusoids and P. viridis have grown together. You take your chances on which species any one shoot is.

Bring plenty of dirt to fill in the holes you dig!  If you forget to bring dirt, there will be dirt available on site for $2.00 for enough for you to fill every 5 gal hole you dig.

COSTS                                                                                     Return to top

SEE THE NOTE ABOVE ABOUT DIRT  for all plants that are dug!

Members of ABS and TBS get a discount. For $40 you can join both groups on the spot if you are not a member. Your new membership will be good through 2004.

ABS and TBS members get a special price discount. For those who work 2 hours, you can dig one 5 gal plant for free, and for 4 hours of grove work you can dig two 5 gal plants for free.

In the area where P. bambusoids and P. viridis have grown together, you can dig the small shoots for $7 each.

Additional plants for members are $15 for each 5 gal plant you dig. Bigger plants are more $$$.

Extra Special price discount for members if you agree to dig plants and grow them as part of the TBS Plant Stewardship Program. For those,  5 gal plants are only $5 each. For more information on this program click here .  Steve Muzos is the coordinator of the TBS Stewardship program, so contact him if you have questions..

For non-members, there are no free plants. Each 5 gal plant that you dig is $25.

OTHER STUFF                                                                        Return to top

Bring your own water and sharpened tools - - - pruning saws, shovels, spades, slammers, loppers, pruning shears, gloves, etc.
Also, bring burlap or sheets or pots for your dug pants. If you will have an open truck, be sure to bring something to cover the plants for the trip home.

If you are feeling adventurous and want to camp there Friday and/or Saturday night, there is water and electricity by the old trailer house, and plenty of room to camp. The inside of the trailer house is storage and serves as home to several non-human critters, but does have a toilet..

These groves may have poison ivy (leafless but still poisonous) and smilax (AKA cat briar, thorny vine, briar, #@*!@# vine, etc.).
