BAMBOO SILENT AUCTION DETAILS
Auction was August 23, 2003, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Zilker Botanical Garden, Austin, TX.
1. Bidding on plants at the festival silent auction will be limited to Texas Bamboo Society (TBS) members. You can join TBS at the festival or in advance (with this link).
2. In order to bid, you
must agree to grow the plant as part of the TBS Stewardship Program.
Winners will act as plant stewards and grow the plants in Texas, or
a neighboring state in a habitat similar to one found in Texas. Plants
must be grown outdoors, either in the ground or in a container. Stewards
will keep growth records and submit information to TBS every year (information
similar to what is found at http://www2.austincc.edu/muzos/TXbambooDataForm.htm
).
You will grow your plants until they are ready to propagate by divisions,
then you will provide TBS with one propagated plant in August of each year
(in time for the Texas Bamboo Festival) for three seasons and keep
the original plant. TBS will use the propagated plants to grow, sell or
continue/expand the program.
3. Vendors and volunteers may bid before 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning, once the auction is ready.
4. Bidding will be open from 10:00 a.m. -4:00 p.m. for members attending the festival.
5. Where there is more than one plant of a species in the auction (see Phyllostachys atrovaginata), your bid will be for ONE of the plants, not for all of them. Each plant will be sold separately.
6. Opening bids for each plant appear in the table of plants on this web site. Bid increments must be in whole dollar amounts (no cents) with no limit on how much you can increase the bid. These opening bids are very low, relative to the value of the plants. There is no reserve . . . high bidder gets the plant!
7. Plants must be paid for and picked up by 6:00 p.m. Saturday, or they will be auctioned on Sunday.
8. If you are a member and unable to attend the festival you may still participate! You can mail a check (made payable to TBS), with a list of your maximum bid for each plant on which they choose to bid. Checks must be received by Thursday, August 21, 2003. Someone from TBS who is not bidding in the auction will bid for you prior to the close of the auction. Refunds will be made by TBS as appropriate. Send your check to:
Texas Bamboo Society Auction
6707 Willamette Drive
Austin, TX 78723
Absentee bidders must complete a copy of the bidder agreement and include it with their check(s). Please print a copy of the form from this link.
Absentee bidders have two choices regarding their checks. You can send one check to cover all of your maximum bids for all plants on which you wish to bid, or you can send a separate check for each maximum bid for each plant. Please mail everything in one envelope, and include a note which makes your intentions clear.
Bidding for absentee members will be done at 12:00 p.m. (noon), 2:00 p.m., and from 3:45 - 4:00 p.m. Bid increments for absentee members will be placed in $5.00 amounts, up to your maximum bid.
Absentee bidders must arrange for someone to pick up their plants, or agree to pay for USPS Priority Mail shipping plus a $5.00 donation for handling, in order to have 3-gal plants they win mailed to them. Shipping 15-gal plants probably is not cost effective, so if you are an absentee bidder, be sure to arrange in advance for someone to take care of large plants you may win until you can pick them up.
9. PLANT SITTERS WANTED! TBS members in the Austin area who want to take care of any of the auction plants before the festival are encouraged to volunteer! Email Steve Muzos.
10. If you would like to
donate interesting plants for the silent auction, email Steve
Muzos.
Here is how the silent auction works.
TBS members will go to the person who is watching over the auction and will be given a bidder number.
The plants will be inside on tables and each will be numbered and identified. Next to each plant will be a sheet of paper with lines on it.
If you want to bid you, you write your bidder number, instead of your name, on the sheet along with your bid amount.
The bidding will go on for all plants from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. It is called a silent auction because there is no auctioneer. All plants are available for bidding all day, and all at the same time.
You are welcome to walk around, look over the plants, and bid as often as you want and on as many plants as you want, as long as the auction is open. If someone outbids you, you can just walk back over to the table and write down a higher bid on that plant if you choose to do so.
Whoever has the highest bid written down at 4:00 p.m. wins.
Usually there is a bit of a rush to bid near the end!
