Celebrate the signing of the U.S. Constitution at Signing Day event, 9/18

Austin Community College (ACC) hosts the 11th annual Constitution Signing Day event honoring the signing of the U.S. Constitution Tuesday, September 18, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Eastview Campus, Building 8000, Rm. 8500 (3101 Webberville Rd.).

Attendees will honor and recognize the creation and signing of the U.S. Constitution while discussing its daily impact on our lives.

This year, the event features an in-depth look into the impacts of the 55th anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright (1963).

“This was a landmark case in our nation,” says Kris Seago, ACC Government professor. “The Supreme Court unanimously ruled that under the Sixth Amendment, states are required to provide attorneys to criminal defendants who cannot afford one on their own.  It was a decision that resulted in the first public defenders system in the U.S.”

The program includes a screening of the film “Gideon’s Trumpet” followed by a panel discussion and answer period.

Sponsored by the ACC Government Department and Center for Public Policy and Political Studies (CPPPS), the event is free and open to the public. Refreshments are provided.
