ACC hosts a reading & discussion series for veterans & community

Austin Community College (ACC) hosts Veteran’s Voices, a reading and discussion series for veterans and the community.

Events will be 4 to 6 p.m. October 25, November 1, and November 8 at the ACC Highland Veterans Resource Center, Building 4000 (6101 Highland Campus Dr.).

Participants will read aloud from classic and contemporary works about war, military service, and the return to civilian life. Selected texts are intended to prompt reflection on combat, the meaning of service, and civic responsibility. Selections also consider the experiences of women veterans and families of veterans. After the readings, participants engage in facilitated conversations that explore how the texts relate to their own experiences.

“Veterans’ Voices offers participants the opportunity to better understand their individual and shared experiences by engaging with others in a low-pressure environment,” says Dr. Dorado Kinney, ACC executive dean of student services. “Together, we hope to foster communication and understanding between veterans and the community.”

The series is sponsored by ACC in partnership with Humanities Texas and made possible by a Dialogues on the Experience of War grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The public is invited to these free events. Light refreshments are provided.
