AUSTIN (KXAN) — Student organizations from Austin Community College donated more than 4,300 books, games, and puzzles to the Travis County Sheriff’s Office for its Brown Santa program.
Brown Santa is a community service program launched in 1981 that collects books, puzzles, and games for children of disadvantaged families.
For the first time this year, the program started collecting puzzles and games as another way to help develop skills and creativity among children.
This year Brown Santa was sponsored by the College's Student Government Association (SGA) and partnered with other ACC student organizations.
The “I Can Read” book drive asked students, faculty, and the community to donate new or gently used books.
The organizations partnering with SGA this year include the Male Leadership Program, Alpha Delta Kappa, the Austin Community College Adjunct Faculty Association, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, the Austin Community College Classified Employees Association, and ACC’s Student Life.
Austin Community College has donated more than 28,000 books to the Brown Santa since 2009.
