Austin Community College (ACC) invites students, employees, and the community to its annual Juneteenth Festival 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 14, at the Eastview Campus courtyard (3401 Webberville Rd.). The event commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas.

“This is an important time to reflect on our past so we can continue to move forward,” says Darrell Merriweather, Student Services specialist. “By participating in these festivals our community can celebrate the victories of the past and present and find ways in creating more equality for everyone in the future.”

Friday’s festival includes performances from the Rhythm & Soul Dance Group. Families also can enjoy music, family-friendly activities, vendor booths, and information about programs at ACC. The event is sponsored by the ACC African-American Cultural Center, ACC Black Student Success Committee, and City of Austin Code Compliance. Lunch will be provided.

It is one of several planned events scheduled in recognition of Juneteenth. Other festivities include:

• The Central Texas Juneteenth Historical Parade featuring ACC students, faculty, and staff 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Comal Street and MLK Boulevard.

• A celebration at the ACC African-American Cultural Center 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, at Eastview Campus, Bldg. 2000, Rm. 2131. There will be a Panel Discussion, Juneteenth Trivia, a short video, and music. Light refreshments will be provided.

All events are free and open to the public.
