Throughout Black History Month, Austin Community College (ACC) sits down with influential and accomplished faculty and staff to discuss what Black History Month means to them.

Meet Noble Udoh, ACC Student Government Association President for the 2019-2020 academic year. He had the opportunity to attend the American Student Government Association conference in Washington, D.C., with other SGA executive board members in the fall. Read more about him below.

Why do you work at ACC?

I work at ACC because I believe that each student has unique traits, a unique background, and a distinct story and as such, should be represented properly in ways that indicate the inherent value of that student.

Why do you believe it's important for the college to commemorate Black History Month?

I believe it's important for the college to commemorate Black History Month because it shows recognition of the hard work put in by black historical figures to set a good foundation for the successful black professionals that we see today to thrive in their various fields. This also shows students of color at the college that anything is possible if they put in the work.

What are some personal or professional accomplishments you are most proud of?

I would say that I am most proud of my growth. There are many things I have accomplished in my time at ACC but the most important thing to me is the growth I have experienced and how I use that to empower others.

What's the best lesson you've learned?

This is a tough one because I learn a lot of things from books and people so it's difficult to single out one lesson. However, one very important lesson I would like to share is that you should strive to be the best version of yourself. Don't be average.

Why do you feel it is important to seek out and value diverse perspectives?

Diverse perspectives usually have stories behind them and these stories empower people and help those in positions of power to make decisions that are representative of the population.

How do you build bridges between communities?

I think that there are many ways to build bridges between communities but one way is to get people to see the uniqueness and value of each individual and this can be done through storytelling.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by my desire to become the person that God has called me to be.
