Austin Community College (ACC) invites the community to a conversation with actress and trans advocate Nicole Maines 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the ACC Highland Campus, Building 1000 Social Staircase (6101 Highland Campus Dr.).
Maines, 21, stars as the first transgender superhero on The CW's "Supergirl" and also works on USA’s “Royal Pains.” She is currently filming a new movie called “BIT.”
“Nicole is a powerful voice for the LGBTQ community,” says Shelley Mitchell, ACC professor and moderator of the conversation with Maines. “She’s fearless when it comes to sharing her journey and helping others find courage to overcome their own obstacles.”
Mitchell will lead a discussion on Maines’ childhood, social activist work, and her rapidly growing film and TV career.
"If I had had a trans superhero, someone who looks like me wearing a cape, [while] growing up, that would have changed the game," said Maines in a recent conversation with USA Today. "That would have been an entire new level of validation in myself to think that I can be a superhero!"
The ACC event is free and open to the public. No SXSW wristband or badge is required.
Registration is encouraged, but not required. To register, visit austincc.edu/nicolemaines.
